It covers 99 km2 and it is inhabited by approximately 1.500 people. It is likely that the island was named after its founder, Kythnos, although it is not certain that he actually existed.

Kythnos: An Island of Celebration Festivity Music and Tradition

The festivals are events that are most important to the locals. Big or small, they give the opportunity to the locals not only to practice their religious duties, but also to party for many days. People have fun with the local musicians who play the violin, the lute and the bagpipe. You will be surprised by the famous dance “balos” and the dancing skills of the locals. You will experience a rare, genuine Aegean tradition.

You will also be fascinated by the custom of the “wedding” and the carnival events on “Tsiknopempti” and on the last Sunday of the carnival, when a great carnival takes place in Chora with the carnival king of Kythnos, “Lazanis”.

The custom of “Fotara” is equally interesting, on the eve of St. Theodori , when young boys and girls of the village light a big fire and jump over it in order to be strong and healthy.

On the eve of May the first, the young men of the village gather at night singing the tune of May accompanied by the musicians, pick flowers from the house yards and hang them outside the front doors of the girls with whom they are interested in dating.

At Easter, the preparations begin on Holy Thursday by painting the Easter eggs, the baking of Easter cookies and the painting of the roads of the village. On Good Friday, the locals decorate the epitaph and in the evening they have the procession. On Holy Saturday, the local traditional pies are baked. On Easter Sunday, you can see the traditional custom of the “swing”, along with singing and dancing.
